Background

Plessey South Africa acquired the Company Servitek in the early 1980s to expand its business activities into the mobile radio and Navigation Systems fields. In those days Servitek represented SEL and after this acquisition Plessey SA naturally represented SEL in South Africa for its Navigation Systems Business.

When Dimension Data acquired Plessey SA in 1998, the business units that they did not require were sold to a Management team. These business units were grouped together and Tellumat (Pty) Limited, a new legal entity, was established.

The Defence Division of Tellumat (Pty) Limited comprised two separate business units – Radar and Navigation Systems.

The Directors of Tellumat (Pty) limited decided to implement the Governmentxs Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) policy by bringing in a BEE partner at Business Unit level. Tellumat (Pty) limited decided to sell a 40% share of Tellumat Navigation Systems (Pty) Limited to the selected BEE partner, Harambe Technologies, a Company owned by Historically Disadvantaged Individuals (HDI), while retaining the remaining 60% shareholding.

The newly formed company has been named SIA Solutions (Pty) Ltd. SIA being a Venda (one of the 11 official languages in South Africa) word for Direction, encompassing Navigation, Guidance and Control.
